Undercover Injury

Undercover Injury

Done correctly. Movement/Exercises will strengthen and protect your body. Done incorrectly. They will weaken and damage it.
This is at the heart of what I mean when I say ‘Undercover Injury’. The movements don’t even have to be strenuous on the body. It can happen from simply vacuuming your house.
Let me explain how, and then we can tackle why this is such an important matter when it comes to exercising.

Most people are in a state of structural imbalance in this day and age. Stemming mainly from our work and rest activities, never mind our exercise. It can be as subtle as the occasional niggle in your shoulder, back, etc. One activity is compounding the other over time, so you barely know that it is happening. Our body then learns these structural habits and adopts them as “normal”. We become “comfortable” in that structure. Our joints and muscles adapt, simply looking to do what the human body does best: survive.

With society so focused on being thin or buff when it comes to physical health. The importance of a persons base structure is overlooked, in favour of the shiny thing.
Both by them and more often than not, by their trainer. Which is understandable in a world where everyone wants the shortcut to health and wealth. But it does not make my job very easy when it comes to competing with such a mentality. Normally, people come to me when the damage has already been done. Where it could have been avoided from the start.

So why is this so important?
Well, the issue is that this kind of injury, created by the base structure not being given the right attention, means that the catalyst is very often the exercise they are doing to try and improve themselves. But due to its nature. The injury does not occur during exercise, even though the exercise is only compounding the problem, along with our other activities. Making the problem far worse. I see this all the time.
While working in the commercial fitness industry. I took the liberty of stripping back and changing protocols I was ‘teaching’, such as the “Insanity” classes. The number of people that would be performing the simplest movement incorrectly, while at the same time performing high-level versions even worse, was painful to watch.
I have a saying about those kinds of programs: “They only show you the sweaty tshirts, not the trail of injured bodies”. And I wont even begin to talk about the standard of training they provide to the qualified trainers. But I digress.

In keeping with my tradition, I will keep the blog short and finish with this. If you and your coach are not building your training around having a healthy body with a longevity approach, especially with regards to your structure. Then you will only end up forking out more and more money later on as you try to reclaim your basic human physical functions without being in perpetual pain and dis-ease.

This is the main reason I created the M.O.V.E. protocol. That even the base membership holders at Optimal Ability have access to. And regular guidance.

As always. Take care folks.
